Why stay in Porto de Mós instead of central Lagos?

If you want easy access to Lagos without staying in the busiest part of town, Porto de Mós is hard to beat.

You'll be close to Lagos Old Town, restaurants, boat trips, and all the main attractions, while enjoying a quieter setting right near one of the region's most beautiful beaches. Many guests tell us they love being able to escape the crowds after a day of sightseeing — and that Porto de Mós Beach at sunset quickly becomes their favourite spot.

Is Lagos a good base for exploring the Algarve?

Yes — and one of the best. Lagos sits in a wonderful position for exploring both the western and central Algarve.

From Casa Palmeira, you can comfortably visit:

• Portimão (~30 min)

• Lagoa (~25 min)

• Silves (~40 min)

• Sagres (~32 min)

Most destinations work beautifully as day trips, meaning you can explore the whole region without constantly changing accommodation. It's one of the reasons I always say Lagos is the ideal Algarve base.

Do I need a rental car in the Algarve?

A car isn't essential for Lagos itself, but we highly recommend one if you want to see more of the region.

Many of the Algarve's most beautiful beaches, cliff walks, villages, and viewpoints are much easier to reach by car. It also makes a huge difference for visiting summer festivals, local markets, and restaurants away from the main tourist areas. Public transport between towns is limited — especially in the evenings — so having your own wheels gives you real freedom.

How far is Casa Palmeira from Porto de Mós Beach?

Porto de Mós Beach is just minutes from the apartment — and honestly, it's one of the main reasons many guests choose this area.

The beach is known for its dramatic golden cliffs, wide sandy shoreline, family-friendly atmosphere, and some of the most spectacular sunsets in the Algarve. It's also a wonderful spot for a morning walk before the day gets going, or an evening meal overlooking the ocean at António's Restaurant right on the beach.

What are the best beaches near Casa Palmeira?

Our guests regularly come back raving about:

• Porto de Mós Beach — right on the doorstep, golden cliffs and wide sandy shore

• Praia Dona Ana — stunning cliff formations, crystal-clear water

• Praia do Camilo — reached via iconic wooden stairs, great for photos

• Cataplana de marisco — a traditional copper pot stew of mixed shellfish, rich and deeply flavourful

• Grilled sardines — especially in June and July when they're at their very best

• Arroz de polvo — octopus rice, a Portuguese staple done beautifully in the Algarve

• Frango piri-piri — the famous spicy grilled chicken, a must-try

• Pastel de nata — the iconic Portuguese custard tart, best enjoyed warm from a local bakery

Do I need restaurant reservations in Lagos?

During the summer months, yes — especially for the more popular spots.

July and August are particularly busy, and restaurants like Luca's Rooftop can be fully booked several days in advance. If you're planning a special dinner or a sunset meal, it's always worth booking ahead rather than risking disappointment. I always say: book first, thank yourself later.

Is the tap water safe to drink in Portugal?

Yes. Tap water in Lagos and throughout Portugal is safe to drink and meets strict European quality standards.

Many of our guests bring reusable water bottles and refill them throughout their stay — a great habit for the environment and your wallet!

What is the best time of year to visit the Algarve?

The Algarve truly is a year-round destination — each season has its own charm.

• April to June: Pleasant temperatures, wildflowers, fewer crowds. A personal favourite.

• July to August: Beach weather at its best, summer festivals, and lively nightlife.

• September to October: Warm sea temperatures, golden light, and a more relaxed pace. If I had to pick one month, September would be near the top of my list.

• November to March: Mild winters, dramatic coastal walks, quiet towns, and great value.

Is the Algarve safe for families?

Yes. The Algarve is widely regarded as one of Europe's safest and most family-friendly holiday destinations.

Families love Lagos for its beaches, outdoor activities, pedestrian-friendly Old Town, and relaxed atmosphere. As with any destination, basic precautions are sensible, but visitors consistently find the area welcoming and safe. We've welcomed many families at Casa Palmeira over the years and it never disappoints.

Do people speak English in the Algarve?

Yes — English is widely spoken throughout Lagos and most tourist areas of the Algarve.

You'll have no problem communicating in restaurants, shops, attractions, and supermarkets. That said, learning a few words of Portuguese is always appreciated by locals — a simple obrigado (thank you) goes a long way and always raises a smile!
